Agency model4 min read

One team, one scope, one price. The case against the handoff tax.

The agency model is built on specialisms that never speak. The customer pays for the gaps. There is a simpler way to organise the work.

Here is how a familiar project goes. A brand agency writes the strategy. A design studio interprets it. A web shop builds it. A performance team inherits it and discovers the tracking was never specified. A content team is briefed last, with two weeks and no context.

Everyone does their job. The work still arrives diminished. The customer pays for the seams: the re-briefs, the reconciliation, the slow drift between what was meant and what was shipped.

Specialism is not the problem. Separation is.#

You need deep craft. You do not need five companies protecting their scope. The difference is whether the specialists share a brief, a standard and a consequence.

One team does not mean one skill. It means one definition of done.

When strategy, design, engineering and media sit in the same room, the trade-offs get made by the people who understand them. A headline can change because the page needs to load faster. A tracking plan can change because the campaign idea depends on it. Nobody has to write a change request to have a thought.

What one scope actually buys#

  • Fewer translations. The brief is read by the people who build, not summarised for them.
  • Faster decisions. The person with the context has the authority to decide.
  • One measure. The work is judged by the outcome, not by each supplier's deliverable list.
  • No orphan work. Someone owns the thing after launch.

The commercial bit#

One team, one scope, one price is not a discount. It is an alignment mechanism. You are buying a smaller number of people with a larger shared context, and you are removing the coordination cost that used to sit between them.

That is the bet: fewer meetings, fewer vendors, fewer places for the idea to die. More of the budget reaching the work.
